Electro-Harmonix Electric Guitar Effects Pedals
Anybody who plays the electric guitar will tell you that guitar effects pedals are the lifeblood of tone and feel. Guitar effects pedals come in several different forms, but we’ll get to that in a little bit. Right now let’s look at the types of effects that are available.
When you are playing an electric guitar, an electronic signal is transmitted to the amplifier from the guitar. That cord between the guitar and the amp carries the signal and converts it to the lovely music you are playing. Pretty cool and that is the inspiration that led guitar god Ace Frehley to the electric guitar to begin with.
Effects can be placed between the guitar and the amp that can alter that signal in any one of a myriad of ways. There are distortion/overdrive type effects, filtering effects, volume effects, time delay effects, modulation effects and pitch related effects. All add a different dimension to the sound produced depending on the type of music you play.
One of the main manufacturers of guitar effects is a company called Electro-Harmonix. These folks have a wide diverse range of effects available in tube or solid state styles. Tube effects typically have a warmer feel to the sound, but you run the chance of blowing a tube at any moment. Solid state effects are much more stable and reliable. The difference in sound quality is not that significant.
Some of the most popular effects are distortion type, graphic EQs, and chorus or time delay effects. Other popular ones are sustain, feedback type and reverb pedals. Electro-Harmonix offers something for every player to enjoy.
Like the Double Muff fuzz/overdrive combo. For metal and rock players, this one is a dream with it’s smooth overdriven tube-like sound coupled with the muff/fuzz distortion of bands like Metallica and Poison. This one has two muff channels and a single/double slider switch for total control.
Maybe you prefer a more technical effect. In that case, there’s the Graphic Fuzz EQ/distortion/sustain. Full sustain and overdriven distortion with complete graphic equalizer ability. Gives you autonomy over every frequency in the spectrum.
But you don’t always want a hard, fuzzy tone. For softer, bluesy tones Electro-Harmonix has pedals like the Deluxe Memory Man with a combo of analog delay, chorus and vibrato. The delay/vibrato delivers a sound like that theme song from the film “Pulp Fiction”.
Straight chorus effects can be panned left or right using two amps in sequence or combined for a stereo sound in every chord. If you have ever heard a guitar that sounded like two or three instruments, that’s a good chorus effect.
But you may want a more spacey effect and for that Electro-Harmonix has a selection of shimmering phased or flanged effects like those employed by the great band Rush.
Effects can be bought as a floor pedal (stomp box), on board the amplifier or as a rack mounted component. Electro-Harmonix deals in the stomp box type floor pedal effects. The company has been around for a few years and really knows their effects. Famous guitarists like Kurt Cobain, David Gilmour and many others have made Electro-Harmonix their choice.
I say if it’s good enough for the pros, it’s good enough for us. Check out Electro-Harmonix for a full line of quality guitar or bass effects.
